The regional government of Madeira has invested and is currently investing in a number of sustainable solutions and projects to protect the island's precious terrestrial and marine wildlife. In 2021, the regional government allocated around 40% of its budget to the environment and climate action, with a special focus on the renewable energy sector, forest fire prevention, and sustainable management of water resources.
The local government and the regional research agency ARDITI have also teamed up to participate in the Clean Atlantic project which aims to source marine plastic waste and develop best practice solutions to prevent further marine litter in future. Plastic waste is also being tackled by NGOs, whale watching companies and research institutions through workshops and events including beach cleanups.
