The annual Celebration to Welcome the Right Whales in Garopaba is a commemorative date where various organisations, local entities, musical bands, and art, culture and education groups take part to engage with the community and celebrate the arrival of the whales.
In a socio-environmental context, community stakeholders in the region have been holding the Whale Welcome Celebration since 2016, an independent event with the support of public authorities, with the aim of bringing the community closer to the presence of these docile whales and promoting the development of a protected sanctuary so that the whales feel safe and keep coming back.
The event also boosts Community Based Tourism, with activities such as visits to organic farms, alambiques (an artisanal distillery for cachaça, a spirit made from sugar cane) and environmental trails, promoting connection with nature and local culture. Around 5,000 people are expected to attend the festival, and with digital marketing actions, the event will reach an even larger audience, amplifying the social and environmental impact of the initiative.
The Celebration is an opportunity for everyone to get involved in the cause of preserving right whales, one of the greatest symbols of marine biodiversity, and to strengthen ties with local communities. Admission is free, and the cultural and educational activities are open to anyone interested.
