The TOBTerra Network is an informal non-profit organisation founded in 2015 to promote and encourage land-based whale watching tourism in the region. It achieves this goal through the training of environmental guides and local guides who specialise in local history, fauna and flora, the preservation and appreciation of natural resources, as well as the culture of the traditional communities of the right whale nursery area. It has boosted whale-watching tourism by land, which until then had been non-existent.
The Network is formed by environmental and tourist guides, technicians from the Costa Catarina Associations, the AMA and the IFSC, among other organisations. The work involves integrated itineraries in partnership with the organisations, including ecological trails accompanied by local guides who help visitors learn about the ecosystems. Land-based right whale watching is a unique feature of the Santa Catarina area, as the whales are very close to the shore, which makes it easier to spot them from beaches and headlands.
