Donald Varela Soto, founder of Tapir Valley Nature Reserve, is a local conservation leader whose vision transformed former cattle ranching land into a thriving refuge for wildlife. Growing up in Bijagua, he witnessed the loss of forests and biodiversity, this inspired him to become involved in conservation and environmental education in Bijagua, which later led him to restore the land and protect local species. Through years of dedication, Donald has led ecosystem restoration efforts, allowing forests to regenerate naturally and wildlife to return. His work extends beyond conservation, actively involving the community in protecting their natural heritage.
Today, he is recognized as a key figure in local conservation, inspiring others through his commitment to coexistence, education, and respect for nature. His leadership has helped position Bijagua as a place where conservation and community go hand in hand.
