Growing Future Conservation Leaders

Environmental education plays a central role in the conservation efforts of Bijagua. At Tapir Valley Nature Reserve, we recognize the importance of investing in strong environmental education programs as a foundation for long-term impact. Through initiatives such as Travesía Verde and youth-led projects like Planta una Nueva Vida, children and young people are actively engaged in learning about biodiversity, ecosystems, and conservation as well as supporting research on tapir behavior and land use, and strengthening our understanding of wetland ecosystems and how environmental conditions can affect Tlalocohyla populations

These projects also create meaningful opportunities for the wider community to connect with and develop a deeper appreciation for their local biodiversity. By fostering curiosity, knowledge, and a sense of responsibility from an early age, these initiatives help build a culture of conservation where people not only understand nature, but truly value and protect it. These programs create a pathway where participants grow into environmental leaders, developing a strong connection with nature and a sense of responsibility for protecting it. Many young participants are taking leadership roles, supporting educational activities for younger generations.  This cycle of learning and leadership strengthens community engagement and ensures that conservation is sustained over time, rooted in local knowledge and participation.
