Collaborations for the sake of wildlife include interregional and multidisciplinary research networks such as MARCET, a Macaronesian-wide project with the aim of transferring knowledge between the participating regions (Madeira, Azores, Cape Verde and the Canary Islands) to better understand cetacean habitat use and movement and promote the sustainable development of whale watching.
Local whale watching companies, NGOs, local institutions and artists have also collaborated to raise awareness on marine life in the region through public artworks
The Whale Heritage Area application process has motivated teamwork amongst stakeholders from different parts of the local community for the sake of cetacean conservation, which even resulted in donations to the initiative. It has also encouraged competing whale watching companies to come together and commit to actively participate and collaborate.
