Indigenous recognition

The Mamirauá Reserve is full of history and when visiting Uakari Lodge tourists have the opportunity to visit a local community. This idea was started by the communities themselves as a way to show visitors what life is like and as a way to share their pride in being farmers or fishermen providing for their entire community organisation.

Unfortunately, there is still great prejudice against indigenous peoples in Brazil. In the Amazon, a large part of the population is indigenous or has indigenous heritage. Despite this prejudice, many people are eager to rediscover their origins, seeking indigenous recognition, both internally and by the authorities, fighting for recognition of these areas as indigenous lands. This is not a recent movement, but one that has been gaining strength in recent years.
