In Plettenberg Bay, a burgeoning art movement is gaining traction, focusing on marine themes. Local artists are showcasing their marine-inspired works in public spaces, enriching the cultural landscape. Notably, most art galleries in the town proudly feature pieces dedicated to whales and dolphins.
Among the notable public installations, "Sindi the Whale," a creation by Derek Saul, stands out. Crafted from recycled materials, the sculpture draws its name from the Isixhosa word "umsindisi," which translates to "saviour." Another noteworthy piece is "The Dolphins," a bronze sculpture skilfully fashioned by Robert Leggat.
One can't overlook the striking billboard that warmly greets visitors to Plettenberg Bay. This prominent feature displays a captivating painting of a mother and calf humpback whale, a creation of local artist Gayle Harris.
Adding a dynamic element to the community's celebration of cetaceans is the remarkable "Wanda the Whale." This larger-than-life puppet is a creation of the local performing arts non-profit organization, Lunchbox Theatre. During performances at schools and various venues, Wanda captivates audiences while imparting crucial knowledge about whale conservation and the imperative of safeguarding these magnificent creatures.
