The community of Plettenberg Bay has undertaken a range of proactive measures aimed at preserving the area's natural splendour and safeguarding its marine ecosystem. One significant endeavour is the ongoing volunteer beach cleaning activities, in addition to campaigns such as Keep Plett Clean and "The Sea Starts Here", which raise awareness of the effects of littering and encourage active participation in anti-littering efforts.

Whale watching businesses in the area are equally committed to environmental responsibility. They've taken steps like refraining from providing single-use plastic water bottles to their guests and ensuring the proper disposal of biohazardous materials such as motor oil and grease.

A distinctive feature of Plettenberg Bay’s Central Beach is the innovative whale replica, repurposed from recycled metal and other materials. This creative installation serves a dual purpose as both an art piece and a litter receptacle.

The town of Plettenberg Bay has earned commendation for its unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship. In November 2022, six of its beaches and two marine tourism boats were awarded coveted Blue Flag status. This designation signifies the town's adherence to rigorous water quality standards and its implementation of sustainable practices, underscoring its standing as a beacon of responsible coastal management.
